The Process
Thanksgiving Break 2005 was a time where most of [what would become] the development team appreciated the much needed time off. When we returned from break Alex gave us quite the surprise. He played a Halo PC map...of our own campus. The idea was revolutionary, and suddenly we were rushing to learn the development tools of Bungie's Halo Editing Kit. Matt began taking pictures of every possible texture on campus, and then suddenly we had one gigabyte of random campus pictures. Brad initially spent a whole weekend learning to use 3DS Max--he had a hard time pulling himself away from the computer. We all began to understand why Alex spent all of break on the map, and after several months of dedication we have a recognizable map of WPI's campus. Actually, that statement is quite modest. Harrington Auditorium and Daniels and Morgan Hall look exquisite. Thanks to Josh and Matt, our new website also looks amazing. Currently, we are trying to improve gameplay in the map. The recent Halo Tournament (March 31, 2006) gave us many new ideas. We eventually hope to develop the WPI Campus Map for other games such as Quake, Unreal, and Counter-Strike. This project will continue into our alumni years, as we hope to include every minor detail of the campus. Hopefully, this new trend of creating campus maps will evolve into an interactive game design business.
